There’s something about fall that makes us want to read a little more slowly.
Maybe it’s the changing light, the cooler evenings, or the return of those quiet moments when settling into a good book feels like the perfect way to spend an afternoon. Fall has always felt like a season of discovery to me—and this year, we’re leaning into that idea by looking beyond our own borders and exploring stories from around the world.
In this issue of Shelf Unbound, we’re celebrating global reads: books that introduce us to new places, cultures, perspectives, and ways of seeing the world. Some will take you halfway around the globe. Others may simply offer a glimpse into a life or experience that feels entirely different from your own. And that’s one of the things I love most about books. You don’t need a passport to travel. You just need to open a cover.
Independent publishers and authors play a particularly important role in bringing these voices to readers. They often take chances on stories that might otherwise be overlooked, champion translated works, and give space to perspectives that deserve a wider audience. In a publishing landscape that can sometimes feel dominated by what is already familiar, these books remind us how much there is still to discover.
So as the seasons change, I hope you’ll let your reading take you somewhere unexpected. Pick up a story set in a country you’ve never visited. Read a translated novel. Follow an author whose perspective is different from your own. You may find a new favorite book—or, just as importantly, see something familiar in an entirely new way.
